UNUSUAL: WHO
Firmly established in the international music industry for the past 40 years, Unusual’s owner, Matt Doherty has depth of experience that is hard to match. His start was quite literally driving the truck. From this to working as an audio engineer during the 1980s, Matt was fortunate enough to be able to make the switch to Production Management in 1991 when he was tasked with helping get a new festival off the ground. This was The Big Day Out and it became the world’s largest touring festival. Matt ran the production of this seminal music event for 21 years. During this time Matt conceived of and started three different companies servicing the business. Staging, Access and Event Surveillance were all key to any event’s success and there was much that Matt learned in this period. Turning back to international touring in 2012, Matt has worked with some of the biggest names in the business. Across all levels of the touring business, Matt continues to tour today, in and out of the arenas, stadia, and festival sites, helping artists make that connection with their fans through their art.
His most recent project has been the publication of a work on Production Management, as Matt believes that we need to do more to pass on our knowledge to the younger generation of music industry professionals. You can find a copy of Mattt’s book here
